Thea Bowman House
Since 1986, our organization has serve low-income, at-risk children and families in the Utica community. We provide quality care to some of our community's most vulnerable children and youth in the hope of breaking the cycle of poverty through a structured program of educational and social enrichment.
Our mission is to provide a safe, nurturing environment to enable culturally diverse children and families to achieve their full potential. Thea Bowman House is built on Agape: unconditional love.
Thea Bowman Programs at DeSales
Universal Pre-K
This program is offered to 160 children who will reach their fourth birthday by December 1st. This program is part of the Utica City School District and offers a 2.5 hour free program to help children prepare for kindergarten under the capable leadership of New York State certified teachers.
School Age Child Care
School-age children receive after school care on school days and all-day care on school holidays and vacations. A structured program for school-age children (5-12 years), including tutoring and homework help, physical activity, creative development and field trips. Transportation is available.
Domestic Violence Ended
This program addresses the needs of children who have been exposed to community or domestic violence. The DOVE coordinator helps the children to restore their self esteem and to make safety plans if they are in a dangerous situation. It also teaches skills that encourage resiliency.
Kids with Promise
This is a free program that provides after school programming for children over the age of 13 or who no longer qualify for child care subsidies. The program includes tutoring, homework help, creative development, and physical activity. Capacity is 35 children.
